The Agency for Assessment and Environmental Control (OEFA in Spanish) of Peru began administrative disciplinary procedure against Petroperu by the spill occurred on June 30, 2014 in the North Peruvian Pipeline near the Cuninico River in Loreto.
In the last week of June, two oil spills of Petroperu company occurred near the town of Cuninico in the heart of the rainforest of Loreto. According OEFA, the spill covers four and a half kilometers of a creek, affecting a population of over 500 people.
With a month of delay, the Perenco company confirmed its first oil spill last December, in the Loreto region, contradicting the Peruvian president, who called Perenco’s work as “the renewal of extractive activity in the region”
The spill is the second of the year in Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Occurred in November, but the news was released a month later by an NGO.
