DETER (Detecção de Desmatamento em Tempo Real) – real time deforestation detection is a service of the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE) of the Brazilian Ministry for Science and Technology. The system uses data obtained from the MODIS sensor aboard the Terra and Aqua NASA satellites. It sends alerts over 6.25 hectares deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon. The data serve as an indication of the rate of deforestation but do not represent the whole area cut down, which in fact is only measured by PRODES system (see 2005-2011 data).
