Exclusive: Survey says demarcating Indigenous lands doesn’t hurt agribusiness, as claimed by Bolsonaro

Jair Bolsonaro (PL) says that demarcating 500 Indigenous lands threatens agriculture. A survey done for the project Mentira Tem Preço (Lies Have a Price) shows that there are 240 demarcation processes in progress, and in most agriculture-producing states, Indigenous land doesn’t cover even 1% of the total land area.

60 candidates in Amazonia had their campaigns funded by deforesters

They received a total of R$1.77 million in 8 states. Most belong to parties in Bolsonaro’s support base in Congress, in particular the Partido Liberal (PL) and the União Brasil. A candidate from Acre, convicted of modern slavery, received the largest donation to any candidate in the Amazon from his own father, arrested for environmental crime.

Deforestation in the Amazon in the month of July increases by 160% during the past three years of the Bolsonaro administration

An area the size of the city of São Paulo was deforested in the Amazon in July 2022 alone. Pará state leads the monthly ranking; however, the cumulative total for the year shows Amazonas state in the lead for the first time. Estimates suggest that the annual rate of deforestation in the biome will be the highest since 2006.
